Weekend in Marietta, Ohio and Parkersburg, WV- Sat. & Sun. July 26 & 27, 2008
Escorted by Scott and Deb Barkhurst

Travel with us to the first organized settlement in the Northwest Territory and experience the past as we make our way to Marietta.  Board the motorcoach in the morning and enjoy a drive through the lovely hills and farmlands of Eastern Ohio.  Once in Marietta we begin with a guided city tour featuring historic sights and landmarks including Indian Mounds built by the Adena Indians between 800BC and 100AD.  After our tour it is on to The Castle of Marietta, one of the best examples of Gothic Revival style architecture in Ohio.  Here we will experience history firsthand with our guide.  After lunch we go on to the Campus Martius Museum focusing on early settlements and original pioneer artifacts.  The restored Rufus Putnam house is also enclosed within a wing of this museum.  Next we will go just across the river to the historic Harmar Village area for free time and shopping.  Our first day concludes with a dinner cruise aboard the Valley Gem Sternwheeler.  We’ll enjoy their Grand Buffet as the gentle splash of the paddlewheel brings back a bygone era. Relax and enjoy spectacular scenery, riverboat hospitality, live entertainment and great food.  Immediately after our dinner cruise we will check in to our hotel.  After breakfast at the hotel, we will begin day two at the Belpre Farmers’ Castle Museum & Educational Center.  Here we’ll see area artifacts such as a ca-1840 carriage, a pre-1900 pump organ, and old farming tools. Next, we’ll take a sternwheeler ride from Point Park in Parkersburg, WV to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, which is located in the Ohio River. Here we will enjoy lunch, a wagon ride, a mansion tour and visit the gift shop on the island.  After returning to Point Park via the sternwheeler, our motorcoach will take us to the Julia-Ann Square District in Parkersburg.  We will tour the largest historic district in the state with our own guide dressed in period Victorian costume.  This area contains the most concentrated grouping of Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne mansions and gardens, all typical of upscale Victorian-era design.  Then, it is time to board the motorcoach for a relaxing ride home.

France: Bordeaux wine country, Lourdes, & Provence

Wed. July 9 - Sun. July 20, 2008

In conjunction with Globus Tours

Before starting his travel company in 2007, Scott taught French for 30 years on the high school level.  He and his wife Debbie took 15 student groups to France during that time.  Let the Barkhursts show you why they love France so much and continue to return as often as they can.

Visit Paris and the romantic French countryside in this 12-day vacation! Start with two nights in Paris where sightseeing includes a visit to magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral and an ascent to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. Then continue by high-speed “TGV” train to Bordeaux and enjoy an excursion to St. Emilion with wine tasting. Travel via Biarritz to Lourdes, where two nights offer enough time to follow the pilgrims to St. Bernadette’s Grotto. Stop in the beautifully preserved medieval walled city of Carcassonne on your way to Nîmes, and enjoy a walking tour. Visit Pont du Gard, the 2,000-year-old Roman Aqueduct, and Avignon. Then drive to Aix-en-Provence and Cannes and stop in the Principality of Monaco where two nights offer the possibility to visit the Monte Carlo Casino and to join an optional excursion to explore the famous artist town of St. Paul de Vence and Nice with its flower market.

Visit magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral, and for a panoramic view, take the elevator to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. Escorted by Scott and Deb Barkhurst

Ohio is full of remarkable history and heritage for young and old.  Travels and Journeys has planned a weekend tour that will take you back to the Underground Railroad days.  You will be transported back to the 1800s by visiting the actual houses on the trail as well as the fantastic new National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.  We will start our trip with a visit to the Jonathon Wright Quaker House in Springboro, Ohio where you will see the most authentic undisturbed secret hiding places for runaway slaves in the state of Ohio.  Next, we will visit the Null cabin build in 1797.  Here we’ll see the hiding space where slaves hid from local bounty hunters.  After lunch on your own, we go on to Cincinnati to the amazing Freedom Center.  This beautiful stone and glass building stands as the newest monument to the freedom of slavery.  Here we will experience stories about freedom’s heroes, from the era of the Underground Railroad to contemporary times.  We will see cutting edge film technology, interactive exhibits, and one of the few remaining slave pens in the United States.  Day one ends with a delicious Yankee-Southern dinner at Burbank’s Real Barbecue.  Day two starts out with a morning city tour of Cincinnati.  After our city tour, our motorcoach will head to Ripley, Ohio where we will enjoy lunch at Rockin’ Robin’s, a nostalgic Soda and Sandwich Shoppe with a lovely view of the Ohio River.  After lunch we will then tour the John Parker home and the Rankin house.  Both of these venues played important roles in our society’s road to freedom.
